The terror attacks of 9/11 have generated a lot of discussion about the relation between the “West” and “Islam” all over the world. It is not only the “Clash of Civilizations” which is up for debate, but many different concepts and ideas about geopolitical world orders, world views and identities. The aim of the dissertations project is to reveal constructions like these in pan-Arab newspapers. It focuses on the following questions: Which concepts of the world order and identity conceptions of “self” and “other” are (re)produced in the Arab media? Which are dominant and which are marginal? In which political and historical context did these constructions emerge and develop? The work is placed in the field of new cultural geography, postcolonialism, and discourse theories.
