Coordination

The project „Humanism in the Era of Globalization“ is coordinated by Aladdin Sarhan (M.A.) and Dr. Carmen Meinert. Dr. Carmen Meinert studied Sinology, Tibetology and Geography at Bonn University. She spent four years carrying out research at Chinese universities (Beijing University, Sichuan University in Chengdu) and fieldwork in Khams (Eastern Tibet). In 2001 she completed her Ph.D. with a comparative study on Chinese and Tibetan Buddhism. After graduating Carmen Meinert lead an independent research project funded by the DFG (German Research Council) at the Asia-Africa Institute at Hamburg University. One of her current researches deals with aspects of violence in Esoteric/Tantric Buddhism in China and Tibet. Carmen Meinert is an associated member of the Center for Buddhist Studies and the Centre for Tantric Studies at Hamburg University. She founded the non-profit organization Jampa e.V. for the promotion of cultural and social projects in the Sino-Tibetan border areas of the PR of China and acted as its director for six years.

Since May 2008 she works as a coordinator of the project “Humanism in the Era of Globalization” and is a research fellow at the Institute of Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) in Essen, Germany. She is teaching at the faculty of East Asian Studies at the Ruhr University in Bochum and was recently awarded the membership in the Global Young Faculty where she is allocated to the research group on climate change.
 
 
Aladdin Sarhan (M.A.) was born in Egypt and studied Political Science, Oriental Philology and Islamic Studies at Bochum University  and thereafter enrolled as a Ph.D. candidate at the Erfurt University. In the years 2002 to 2007 Mr. Sarhan engaged in various activities: as a freelancer in the project “Stand up for Integration” for the integration representative of the North Rhine-Westphalian government, as a senior online editor of the broadcasting cooperation Deutsche Welle in Bonn, as a representative of the Deutsche Welle in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, as well as a PR manager in the field of migration and qualification at the Education Center of the German Trade Union (DGB Bildungswerk e.V.).
Since February 2008 he works as a coordinator of the project of “Humanism in the Era of Globalization” at the Institute of Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) in Essen.
